Crossrail - This project involves building new railways for London, running through the South-East. It will involve a 42km stretch of new tunnels under London from Reading in the west to Shenfield and Abbeywood in the east. 30 stations will be upgraded, 10 new ones will be built along with new infrastructure.
Great Western Route Modernisation (GWRM) – This line extends from London to the South-West and Wales. The existing 19th century railway infrastructure will be upgraded and revamped to provide faster and more reliable services. The programme covers 13 major engineering projects.
North West Electrification Project (NWEP) – The Northern Hub and North-West Electrification programme has involved a multitude of upgrades to the railway in the north of England, with an aim to provide better connectivity, faster journey times and improved capacity. This project is nearly finished.
Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) – The Scottish Government started this project with an aim to increase capacity on the main railway line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The project was estimated to cost a total of £742 million.
Midland Main Line Electrification (MMLE) – This line runs from London St Pancras to Sheffield, via a host of midlands locations. The project involves electrifying the line between Bedford to Kettering and Corby, altering tunnels and bridges and station remodelling works. The project is currently suspended.
